Differences Between
Socials and Greasers
In ‘The Outsiders’
book, there are two main groups, Socials (Socs) and Greasers. They are
different in many ways and they don’t get along very well. So, what are the
differences between them ? First of all, the Greasers are from the East Side of
the town and the Socs are from the West Side. The main difference between them is
money. The Socs are the rich and cool kids, the Greasers are the poor and
emotional kids. Socs have good grades in school, they dressed well and have
nice cars. However, greasers don’t have enough money to buy new clothes or
cars. Also, they are not liked as Socs. They usually have a long and greased
hair. They are more emotional and loyal to their group. On the other hand, Socs

Susan Eloise Hinton is
an American writer. She was born in July 22, 1948. She is known for her
young-adult novels. She wrote her most famous book ‘The Outsiders’ when she was
only 17 years old. She began writing the book when she was 15. The book has
sold more than 14 million copies and still sells. She was not a greaser but she
had many friends who are greasers. She didn’t want to be a teacher. She married
David Inhofe in 1970. Then, she continued to write her novels. She won the Margaret Alexander Edwards Award in 1988.

PONYBOY
Ponyboy Curtis is the
main character of ‘The Outsiders’ book. The book is written by his perspective.
So, who is Ponyboy? Ponyboy is a 14 year old boy who is a greaser. His parents
died in a car accident 8 months before the story. He has a light brown, almost
red and long hair. He has greenish gray eyes but he wishes they were more gray
because he likes to be different from other people. He has two brothers,
Sodapop and Darrel. Darrel is the oldest and Ponyboy is the youngest. They live
together since their parents died. Ponyboy loves Soda because he is like a
friend and he loves him too. However, Darrel is different. He is more strict.
Because he is the oldest, he should take care of his brothers. Sometimes, he
behave his brothers, especially Ponyboy in a bad way but this doesn’t mean that he
doesn’t love them. They are all greasers and they are loyal to their gang.
